Whether it’s a weekend road trip or a cross-country flight, travelling with your dog can be rewarding when done safely. The key is preparation — ensuring your dog is healthy, secure, and stress-free throughout the journey.
Before You Go
1. Schedule a veterinary check-up.
Confirm that vaccinations and parasite preventatives are current. Ask your vet if your dog needs travel documents or a health certificate.
2. Update ID and microchip.
Ensure your pet’s tags and microchip information are current with your contact details.
3. Pack the essentials.
Bring food, bottled water, bowls, waste bags, leash, collar, bed or blanket, toys, and medications. Dogs find comfort in familiar scents.
Car Travel Safety
• Always secure your dog with a seatbelt harness, pet carrier, or crate.
• Avoid feeding a large meal just before travel to prevent nausea.
• Stop every 2–3 hours for water and bathroom breaks.
• Keep windows partly open for ventilation but never let your dog hang their head out.
• Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car — even for a few minutes.
Flying with Your Dog
If you’re flying:
• Contact the airline early to confirm pet policies.
• Use an IATA-approved crate large enough for your dog to stand, turn, and lie comfortably.
• Label the crate with your name, contact, and destination.
• Book direct flights when possible to reduce stress.
Your veterinarian can also provide sedation-free calming options if your dog is anxious about travel.
Choosing Pet-Friendly Destinations
Research hotels, parks, and attractions that welcome pets. Always keep your dog leashed in unfamiliar areas and supervise interactions with other animals.
After the Trip
Monitor your dog for fatigue, stress, or signs of illness. Travel can disrupt routines, so resume regular feeding and walking schedules once home.
